A writer in a Florida newspaper said that the postal service no longer was needed. That the USPS should close up and call it quits. The article can be found on PENews. This was my response to the author:
Another man with nothing but complaints and no solutions. Apparently you are so computer savvy but have never been to USPS.com. That is where you can buy your postage online, schedule to have your precious daughters' package picked up and do a host of other user and customer friendly things. You can have your mail put on hold while you are away, maybe forward your mail permanently or temporarily, order free shipping supplies. You are almost correct on one thing, you do not have to go to the post office anymore the post office can essentially come to you!. All your needs can be met from behind your desk.
There are many people in many towns every day that meet at the post office. It is where neighbors meet and talk about their kids, their families their jobs and their lives. The Post Office in many communities are the hub of community activity with FREE bulletin boards.
There are many people in this country that unfortunately are unable to leave their house and the highlight of their day is 10 minutes with the mailman. There are hundreds of people every year that their lives are saved by letter carriers that were just doing their everyday duty.
There are about 700,000 postal employees nationwide. What in the world do you think would happen to the economy if you put all those people on the street??
Instead of standing in line at the Post Office and griping about how difficult your life is because of it, why don't you try talking to the person standing in line in front of you or behind you. Find put what they do for a living, how happy they are living in their community, maybe Johnny just came home from Iraq and they are mailing party invitations... Work on those social skills that seem to be so lacking that you are completely satisfied with no human interaction. You have a computer and e-mail and you are happy with that. Remember, after major storms or blackouts when you cry about not having a TV to watch or no e-mail access say hi to your mailman, cause damn sure he will still deliver that day!
